Support Girls Hockey
Sponsorship
Together we make hockey accessible, inclusive, and empowering for girls.
BFIHA Sponsorship
Hockey offers young girls more than just a chance to play—it gives them a space to grow, connect, and build confidence both on and off the ice. But for many families, the cost of equipment, travel, and registration can be a major barrier to participation. That’s why we’re committed to providing financial support, ensuring every girl who wants to play has the opportunity to be part of the game, the team, and the lifelong lessons hockey provides.
About BFIHA
The Burnaby Female Ice Hockey Association (BFIHA) is Burnaby’s first dedicated girls’ hockey association — home to 270+ players across 18 teams from age 4-18. We’re proud to create a safe, welcoming space where every girl can play and grow — regardless of background or skill level.
Some background info on BFIHA:
- Evolved from the long-standing Burnaby Wildcats program under BMHA (est. 2002)
- Now operating independently as a non-profit led by a 100% volunteer board
- Focused on growing female hockey in Burnaby and New Westminster
- Both house (recreational) and rep (competitive) streams available from U11 (age 9 & 10) upward
- Play out of Bill Copeland (city), Kensington Arena (city), Rosemary Brown (city), and ScotiaBarn (private)
- Season runs from August to March
- Host of the annual Remembrance Day Tournament – now in its 18th year, attracting 800+ players from across Canada and the U.S. and the brand new Family Day Tournament
- Multiple free, Try Hockey event to introduce new players to the game
- The rise of women’s sport, and especially the PWHL team in Vancouver, makes now the right time to grow female hockey
Running a successful female hockey program comes with a unique set of challenges that require ongoing support, creativity, and collaboration. From rising ice rental costs to the high price of specialized equipment and the need for inclusive coaching, these barriers can limit access and development for young athletes. Addressing these challenges head-on is essential to keeping hockey accessible, equitable, and empowering for every girl who wants to play.
- High monthly ice costs: approx. $15–20K/month (city ice and private ice)
- Less access to affordable municipal ice than long-established integrated (= boys) programs
- Tournament ice at private rates: nearly $40K for our annual Remembrance Day Tournament
- Reliance on private ice(e.g ScotiaBarn) to fill gaps in ice availability
- City of Burnaby is working with BFIHA to provide more municipal ice, but gaps remain
- “Pink tax” in sport → higher dropout rates among girls due to cost and lack of access
- It can cost >$50,000 for a child to play hockey from age 4-18
BFIHA’s current funding model:
- Grant applications (note: limited, unpredictable)
- Tournament revenue (note: our main income generator, but limited by private ice costs; ~35K in revenue but ~25K ice cost)
- Donations and sponsorships, this is where you come in
- Registration fees already creating barriers for families (note: high cost of registration, gear, travel)

Goalie Program Sponsor
Association and Team level
What it funds:
- Loaner gear for U9–U13
- Goalie clinics and development
- Retention incentives for older goalies (registration offsets)
Goalies are the most critical position in hockey, often determining the outcome of a game with their performance. Yet it’s also the most challenging to develop, requiring years of focused training, mental resilience, and technical skill. Many coaches struggle to fully integrate goalies into practice plans, making tailored support and development even more essential. On top of that, goalie equipment is substantially more expensive than regular gear, creating an added financial barrier for families. This makes targeted support for goalie development not just important—but necessary.
Total Goal:
$15,000
Sample Package Options:
- Full Goalie Program Sponsor – $15,000
- Loaner Gear Sponsor – $5,000
- Clinic/Event Sponsor – $2,500
- Team Goalie incentives- $1,500 per goalie
Impact: Makes it easier for girls to try and stick with goaltending, a key growth area.
Recognition: “Goalie Program supported by [Sponsor]” branding, recognition at goalie clinics.
Officials (Referee) Sponsor
Association level
What it funds:
- On-ice training
- Rule application workshops
- female-led mentorship, and development clinics tailored to the unique needs of emerging female officials.
Hockey games can’t happen without officials—and as the female game grows, so does the need for referees. Many of our new officials are just a few years older than the athletes they oversee, learning to manage fast-paced games, make split-second calls, and handle pressure with confidence and fairness. By creating a welcoming, empowering environment, we’re helping shape role models who will inspire the next generation of female athletes.
Total Goal:
$5,000
Sample Package Options:
- "Leaders on the Ice" Sponsor – $5,000
Impact: Your support helps us train, mentor, and equip young women to become confident, capable leaders on and off the ice.
Recognition: “Officials Program supported by [Sponsor]” branding, recognition at officials clinics, shared on socials, website, newsletters.
