Getting started in hockey is exciting—but knowing what gear you need can feel overwhelming. This page outlines the gear your player will need, shares a helpful gear fitting video from Hockey Canada, and lists local stores where you can find both new and used equipment.
What Gear do I Need?
Here's everything you need to suit up safely and confidently on the ice. Proper equipment is essential for comfort, protection, and performance. If you're unsure about sizing or where to begin, please don't hesitate to reach out to your coach or team manager. We're happy to help, and in some cases, may be able to connect you with starter kits, equipment swaps, or loaner gear to get you started.
Required Hockey Equipment
- Base layer – moisture-wicking top and bottom (optional but recommended)
- Athletic support – jock or jill with protective cup/pelvic protector
- Shin guards
- Hockey socks – worn over shin guards
- Hockey pants
- Skates – properly fitted and regularly sharpened
- Shoulder pads
- Elbow pads
- Neck guard – mandatory
- Any practice Jersey (game jersey and socks will be provided by the association)
- Helmet with full cage or full face shield – must be CSA-certified
- Gloves
- Stick – proper height and flex for the player
- Hockey bag – to carry it all
Optional Accessories
- Water bottle (labelled with player’s name)
- Tape (clear for shin guards, coloured/white/black for stick blade)
- Skate guards and towel (for off-ice protection and drying)
- Stick wax (optional for puck control)
- Equipment drying rack or hanger
