Certifications

The role of team managers, coaches, assistant coaches, and safety people are an integral part to ensuring minor hockey happens in your community.

Team Official Certifications

As per BC Hockey requirements, every BFIHA team requires the following rostered team officials:

  • Head Coach
  • Assistant Coaches
  • Manager
  • Hockey Canada Safety Person (HCSP)

Criminal Record Check

BFIHA only accepts Criminal Record Checks (CRC) from the BC Ministry of Justice. Complete your CRC at no cost using the BFIHA CRRP access code.

Respect in Sport

Concussion Awareness Training Tool (CATT)

To complete concussion training, use the Concussion Awareness Training Tool (CATT).

Do You Have Your Hockey Canada HCR#?

Before you begin the registration process you must have a Hockey Canada ID (HCR#). Here are some instructions on how to find your existing HCR#. If you’re new to our association, you may need to obtain an HCR# if you don’t already have one.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS FOR ALL TEAM OFFICIALS


As per BC Hockey requirements, every BFIHA team must have the following rostered team officials: Head Coach, Assistant Coaches, Manager, and Hockey Canada Safety Person (HCSP). Each of these officials must meet specific qualification requirements to be eligible for their role.

Criminal Record Check (CRC)

Complete by: September 1st
Cost: Free
A CRC is required every 3 seasons and can be done online.

  • There is no cost to BFIHA volunteers to complete a CRC.
  • A CRC is NOT required for individuals 17 and younger.

Concussion Awareness Training (CATT)

Complete by: September 1st
Cost: Free

  • All BC Hockey team officials (head coaches, assistant coaches, managers, HCSP, team moms) are required to be qualified in the Concussion Awareness Training Tool (CATT) prior to their participation in any practice or game.
  • As a sports leader, BC Hockey is bringing concussion awareness to the forefront to ensure the safety of all participants and that team officials are aware and educated on concussion protocol and the Hockey Canada return to play procedure.
  • CATT is NOT required for individuals 17 and younger.

Respect in Sports for Activity Leaders

Complete by: September 30th
Cost: $30

  • RIS expires after 5 years.
  • RIS is not required for individuals 15 and under.
  • Required for head coaches, assistant coaches, managers, HCSP, team moms.

ADDITIONAL TEAM STAFF CERTIFICATIONS


In addition to CRC, CATT and Respect in Sport, team staff are also required to complete the following certifications.

U7/U9 COACHES
  • REQUIRED: Coach 1 Intro to Coach
  • COMPLETED BY: December 15th
  • REIMBURSEMENT: We will reimburse you for the course you are required for the level you are currently coaching. We reimburse after all course assignments are completed.

Coaches with Development 1 are required to maintain their certification status by obtaining professional development (PD) points.

HCSP - Hockey Canada Safety Person
  • COMPLETED BY: December 1st
  • EXPIRES: every 3 years
  • COST: $25
  • REIMBURSEMENT: We will reimburse you for the course you are required to take. We reimburse after all course assignments are completed.

PARENT ON-ICE HELPERS - ONLY FOR U7 AND U9
  • Parent On-Ice Helpers are permitted with the U7 and U9 Divisions only. Parent On-Ice Helpers are not permitted for the U11 and higher divisions.
  • The maximum number of parents in the role of On-Ice Helpers that is permitted for the U7 and U9 Division is three.
  • Any required courses/certification for On-Ice Helpers will be covered by the team that they are assisting with through their Team Fees.
  • Parent On-Ice Helpers are permitted to act in this role for one season only. After completing one season as an On-Ice Helper, if the parent wishes to assist with a team on the ice, they must apply to be a Head Coach or Assistant Coach.

THE INTENT OF ON-ICE HELPERS
  • The intent for On-Ice Helpers is to provide a female role model for our young female athletes, encourage parents to explore becoming a coach, allow older BFIHA players graduating players to give back to the BFIHA younger teams, and/or allow older players to obtain their high school volunteer hours.
  • On-Ice helpers are not permitted to coach in any way at any time.
  • On-Ice helpers are permitted to move pucks, set up cones, demonstrate drills, and other similar tasks assigned by the Head Coach.
  • On-Ice helpers are not permitted to be on the bench during games.
  • On-Ice Helpers that are BFIHA players must be a player U15 or higher to participate in this role.
  • Any on-ice helpers must be a current registered member of BC Hockey/Hockey Canada.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS
  • Age 15 and below - no certification required
  • Age 16 and above - Respect in Sport
  • Age 18 and above - Criminal Record Check (on ice helpers that are 17 turning 18 in the calendar year are required to have a CRC)
EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS
  • Age 14 and below - full equipment
  • Age 15 to 17 - helmet with full face mask, neck guard, gloves
  • 18 and above - helmet, gloves
